What’s your role?

Finance Manager. I’m in charge of everything to do with money. I ensure that as the charity continues to grow, it can transition to a more robust financial system.

What’s been your biggest achievement at On Call Africa so far?

I’m not sure that I can take any credit for the big achievements! But as a team we’ve seen the charity double in size. We’ve also invested in new premises and staff. While many charities have been scaling back, On Call Africa is set for growth, and I’m very happy to be part of this.

What made you decide to work for On Call Africa?

As soon as I saw their post advertised and discovered that they work in Zambia, I had to apply. It felt like the very job I had been working towards for so many years.

Why should someone give up their time to volunteer for On Call Africa?

Our volunteers are well supported. As a volunteer, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing experience, while serving the health system in Zambia at the same time.

On Call Africa is working at so many levels to address inequalities in health. I’m so impressed by the way it evolves and adapts, based on Zambia’s needs. We take health care for granted in the UK. Zambia is a stable country, so any input or improvements that can be made to its health system, have long-term effects. Not just for individuals, but for the whole country. Whether your support involves giving:

  • time,
  • expertise,
  • assets, or
  • money.

It’s all used productively, and with respect for the needs of Zambians.

What’s your biggest challenge for the year ahead?

Over the next few months I need to see our accounts up and running on ‘SAGE’, which is proving somewhat challenging.

Tell me something about you that no one else knows…

I once got a lift to a party by the police, in a police car.

Have you got any tips on Zambia for future volunteers?

I’ve visited Zambia many times, initially with work. And every year for holidays, since! I love the place. For any volunteer, I’d say it’s so important to see and learn about the amazing landscape and wildlife.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love seeing family and friends, going dog walking, and travelling!
